Strands Strategy Guide

Practical tips to solve Strands puzzles with fewer hints. Straightforward advice from experience.

Finding the Spangram

The spangram spans from one edge of the grid to the opposite edge. That means it starts at the top, bottom, left, or right border and ends at the opposite border. It is usually the longest word in the puzzle.

Start by reading the theme hint, then scan the border cells for letters that could begin a long word matching the theme. If the theme is "Baby animals", look for something like "BABYANIMALS" winding from one edge to the other.

Theme Discovery Strategy

The theme hint gives you a category. Think of words that fit before scanning the grid. If the hint says "Things in a kitchen", mentally list items: oven, plate, knife, fork, pan. Then look for those words on the grid.

Once you find the spangram, the theme becomes obvious. That is why finding it first is so helpful.

Edge Scanning Technique

Since the spangram must start and end at grid edges, check the top row, bottom row, left column, and right column for promising starting letters.

Trail from each edge letter inward. If a letter on the top row could start a theme-related word, drag downward and see if the word appears. This is faster than randomly scanning the middle of the grid.

Earning Hints Efficiently

You need 3 non-themed valid words to earn 1 hint. These words just need to be 4+ letters and in the dictionary. They do not need to relate to the theme.

Scan for easy common words while you are looking for themed ones. Words like THAT, THIS, HAVE, MAKE, TAKE often appear in grids. Pick them off to build your hint bank, then use hints when you are stuck.

Non-themed words build your hint bank - here LAMB is revealed by a hint.

Common Patterns

  • Themed words often cluster in one area of the grid rather than being spread evenly.
  • The spangram tends to wind through the grid - it is rarely a straight line.
  • Shorter themed words (4 letters) are buried between longer ones. Do not overlook them.
  • Diagonal paths are easy to miss. Scan both row-by-row and diagonal-by-diagonal.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not spend too long on one area. If you cannot find a word, scan a different region.
  • Do not forget the edges. The spangram must start and end at edges.
  • Do not ignore non-themed words. They are free hints if you find 3 of them.
  • Do not use hints too early. Build up a few first so you have them for the hardest words.

Advanced Tips

  • 1After finding 2–3 themed words, look at which letters are still unused. The remaining themed words and spangram are hiding among those leftover cells.
  • 2If you are stuck, try reading the grid backward - right to left, bottom to top. Words you missed forward often jump out in reverse.
  • 3Pay attention to uncommon letters like Q, Z, X, or J. They narrow down which words can be formed in that area.

Common Questions

Should I find the spangram first?
Usually yes. The spangram tells you the theme, making other words easier to find. But if you spot a themed word first, grab it.
How many hints is normal?
Most people use 0–2 hints per puzzle. Using 0 is great, but using hints is part of the game. It is not cheating.
Do non-themed words count for anything?
Yes. Every 3 non-themed valid words earn you 1 hint. They are useful even though they are not part of the answer.
What if I am stuck and have no hints?
Look for common 4-letter words anywhere on the grid. Three of them will earn you a hint. Focus on easy picks rather than themed words for now.
Does word length matter for hints?
Only that the word must be at least 4 letters. A 4-letter word counts the same as a 10-letter one toward earning hints.
Is there a penalty for wrong guesses?
No penalty. If you drag through letters that do not form a valid word, nothing happens. You can try as many times as you want.
